New Year Carol has earned over $250 that will be donated to Cure Alzheimer's Fund... Help double it by New Year's Day!

For better or worse, you're pretty much done listening to Christmas Carols until shortly after Thanksgiving 2015.  But there are still good reasons to listen to the New Year Carol, namely that there is still a week until we ring in the new year, and if you purchase the New Year Carol, every bit of the profit will be donated to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund.  Of course, you could always just donate to the CAF directly, but we hope that it's more pleasant and delightful to obtain our New Year Carol as a reward for your generosity.

Thanks to everyone who has purchased the song and helped us raise over $250 so far.  Please continue to spread the word so we can continue to increase the amount we will donate when this fundraiser concludes on New Year's Day 2015!

Tonight: Saturday 25 October Tea Bazaar 9pm set

My friend the amazing musician Will Bollinger will join me on several songs.
For us this is the actual Halloween/Samhain day and if you study the runes and the alignment of the standing stones you will find that all rays of moonshine converge at the Teahouse in Charlottesville this night and to this and the candyman our set will be dedicated.

Teaching via Lessonface

Old friend Dave Heumann called the other day to see if I would be up for being part of a proposed Jerry Garcia tribute show at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore this winter.  "Hell yes," I said.  He gave me some potential dates and the band lineup, which I won't jinx by elaborating upon now; more on this exciting possibility when I learn it.  Our conversation was cut short when a guitar student arrived at his apartment.  "Are you teaching much," I asked.  "Yeeeeah," he said.  "Hoping to do more as this Lessonface thing gets rolling."  "Lessonface?"  "This online lesson thing that Ashford"--Tucker, a mutual friend,--"and his wife Claire started recently."  I googled it as we wrapped up.  "Yeeeeah, it seems pretty cool," he said, "Walker [Teret] is trying it too.  Weeeeel, I better go teach."  "Wait," I said, "Gimme your mailing address.  I need to send you some copies of this new No Quarter single that you sing on."  "Please!"  He gave me his address.  I sent him some copies of the record.  Then I contacted Ashford and checked out Lessonface, and signed up as a teacher.

I like teaching, have taught guitar, improvisational rock band, creative and expository writing, English literature and Latin.  While teaching, for me, is too draining to do full time, as I've learned first hand, I'm definitely interested in seeing what sort of students, if any, get in touch with me via Lessonface.  Let it be you!

October 3,4 and 5 Shows around Los Angeles

Friday, October 3rd
Silverlake, CA

Saturday, October 4th
Santa Barbara, CA

Sunday, October 5th
Ojai, CA
Ojai Rancho Inn noon- 8pm

Aram Stith, guitarist, has moved to Los Angeles.  But we continue our 20+ year collaborative musical exploration.  These shows, harmoniously arranged in mutual with Kyle Field, who will also perform his own set and guest in ours, will feature electric guitars, voices, songs from the Anomoanon with a focus on songs we co-wrote, songs Aram arranged from traditional and Robert Herrick lyrics, and some new songs just released ("Further Gone" b/w "God Will Let Me Know" No Quarter 2014, which we'll be peddling at the shows) and some unrecorded.

The last time Aram and I together saw Kyle Field was in Christiania in Copenhagen, Denmark, nearly ten years ago; Aram and I had the gig, and Kyle joined us to sing on a couple songs.  Here's to our sets intersecting on these California shows!  Also performing at the Santa Barbara show at Muddy Waters, Little Big Here.

The Ojai Inn show on Sunday, October 5th, is poolside; open from noon with music starting early evening.

Shirley Collins and the Blue Ridge Swim Club 29 June 2014

I wish I could say that Shirley Collins would be appearing at the Blue Ridge Swim Club; she is not.  I mention Shirley Collins and the Blue Ridge Swim Club together here only to avoid writing two blog posts; it's summer and I've been avoiding my computer, working (and playing) outside.

Burning Bridges and Fifth Column Films are raising funds for a movie about Shirley Collins via Kickstarter, and I've contributed a recording of "The Blacksmith" adapted from Shirley and Dolly Collins' version from Anthems in Eden (part of "Song Story").  I've always loved their version and have been developing an arrangement for some years now.  The photo above is of me and my brother Paul at his studio in Louisville, Kentucky, adding modular synthesizer and mixing the track.  It, and other artists' versions of Shirley's songs, are being compiled for a record, Shirley Collins Inspired, available as a premium for donation to the project.  Shirley recently performed live for the first time in many, many years, and has been in the studio recording as well.  I hope to be in the audience for a performance in the near future.

And here is another picture to ring in the next item:
If experience is any guide, there would seem to be little hope in inviting you to come out for a show at the Blue Ridge Swim Club, unless you are a member.  It is, however, come one come all, though guests have to pay the regular visitors charge ($15), except that guest kids in middle school or younger are free.  I'll be performing with Adam Smith (Invisible Hand, Y'all) and Thomas Gunn; three acoustic guitars and three voices that I think will sound golden to anyone who comes and sits across the beautiful pool from the performance deck this Sunday, June 29, 2014.  It's one of my favorite gigs: outside, unamplified, under the trees, beside the green waters of the spring-fed pool.

Ned Oldham with Andy Aylward and the Floaters 21 February 2014 at the Tea Bazaar

Up in the steam and hookharoma of the Tea Bazaar.  Amanda Laskey has the intimate room sounding great and running ship-shape.  It's good for your sinuses and alveoli, too.  Doors are at 8:30, Ned's solo set is at 9.

Old Calf with Angel Olsen at the Southern Tuesday 18 February 2014

Late-breaking fill-in-opener after our No Quarter label-mate had to bag it!  Did we mention the No Quarter Ned Oldham and Old Calf featuring Aram Stith 7", "Further Gone" b/w "God Will Let Me Know" forthcoming this Spring?  Consider it mentioned!

Great early night on a great stage, which full-on electric band Old Calf takes at 9pm sharp.  At The Southern on the downtown mall in Charlottesville.
